What Can Be Recycled?
The vast majority of things that we used to just throw away into landfill can be recycled. We estimate that 95% of commercial waste can be recycled but obviously that varies depending on the type of waste that is being produced. As a general rule, the following can be easily recycled:
- Cardboard.
- Paper (including newspapers, magazines, junk mail)
- Phone books and directories.
- Plastic bottles; for example, drinks, toiletries, cleaning products.
- Food tins, drink cans, metal sweet and biscuit tins.
What Can’t Be Recycled, i.e. What is Non-Recyclable?
The answer to what can’t be recycled still depends a little on where in the UK you are. As a general rule, the following can’t be recycled:
- Plastic wrappers
- Shredded paper
- Food-soiled packaging
- Polystyrene
- Paper towels
- Plastic bags/bin bags
- Textiles, clothes or shoes
Non-recyclable waste can often be dealt with in other ways such as high temperature incineration, For obvious reasons, the legislation surrounding this area is detailed and complex.
