Under the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment regulations (WEEE), every item that has a plug, a charger, batteries or carries a crossed-out wheelie bin logo can be recycled, and that includes large appliances such as refrigerators or fridge freezers. The days of ozone harmful gases are thankfully largely behind us. Very old fridges, however, may still contain gases that harm the ozone layer. Modern refrigerators usually use a refrigerant called HFC-134a (1,1,1,2-Tetrafluoroethane), which does not deplete the ozone layer, unlike Freon. A R-134a is now becoming very uncommon in the UK and Europe. Newer refrigerants are being used instead.

Fridges and freezers are bulky and heavy. They need to be lifted safely using more than one person or need specialist safe lifting equipment. In addition, if you are contemplating doing this yourself, please remember that loads such as fridges are unwieldy, can move about or just be generally unsafe if not carried safely.
