What is “Condemned Food”?
One legal definition is “condemned food means any food which has been declared by the Medical Health Officer to be unfit for human consumption”. In practice, condemned food is food that has been deemed unfit for human consumption and needs to be disposed of properly.
Food can be condemned by an Environmental Health Officer in the UK for a variety of reasons including being out of date, cross contaminated, kept at the wrong temperature and a myriad of other reasons.
Large quantities of condemned food can result from incidents such as flooding or fire. For example, if flood water affects porous food containers such as packets, the food becomes condemned through no fault of anyone. The most common occurrence we deal with is that food is condemned following a freezer breakdown due to a power cut, mechanical or electrical failure. The larger the quantity of food involved, the more likely you will be to need specialist help.
What to do if food is condemned
If it is safe to do so, condemned food should be placed in appropriate sealed containers before calling a company such as ours to come over, collect and dispose of the condemned food safely and legally.
