Oil is lighter than water, therefore it floats above, causing whatever is above the water surface to become contaminated with oil. This can cause significant implications for the health of the environment and everything within it. Over a duration of time, the oil forms a thin layer, as it breaks down, and this layer is called a ‘slick’. As the layer becomes wide and spread out, it becomes extremely thin and it creates a layer above the top of the water and prevents exposure to the sun for the underwater eco-systems, thus causing a catastrophic effect upon sea life and wildlife which ultimately has an impact upon our entire environment.
