Hydraulic oil or fluid is used to transfer pressure from one point to another. They are used within various machinery and equipment such as; power steering systems, transmissions, garbage trucks, aircraft control systems, lifts, or industrial machinery.

There are three types of hydraulic fluid commonly used; (1) mineral oil, (2) organophosphate ester, and (3) polyalphaolefin. You will usually see the following trade names for hydraulic fluid; Durad, Fyrquel, Skydrol, Houghton-Safe, Pydraul, Reofose, Reolube, and Quintolubric.

Hydraulic oil does not usually come with a smell you can always notice, it is usually either an oily smell or no smell at all. If it is unnoticeable because there is no smell detected, then over a duration of time, the leak will create a larger problem(1) For the environment, if spilt into the soil or (2) for yourself if exposed to your skin or lungs. Certain components of organophosphate ester hydraulic fluids are found in blood and urine within 1 hour of having them on your skin. Within 6 hours after animals swallow large amounts of certain components of organophosphate ester hydraulic fluids, they enter the blood and are found throughout the body, especially in fat.

Scientists do not exactly know how it impacts your health once the hydraulic oil has been inhaled, consumed or absorbed into your skin, however, the point being is that there is a significant risk if hydraulic oil is leaked or spilt.
